NOTE: The review is based completely on the dubbed version (the Cartoon Network version). The main characters are Ash, Brock and Misty and not Satoshi, Takeshi and Kasumi as listed in the MAL summary.
I was feeling bored and was lazing around in my house yesterday when I came across a box full of my Pokemon cards. Feeling nostalgic, I pulled out some of the episodes from my trusty friend, the Internet and sat down and watched the thing for hours on end. After about 40 episodes, I thought “Hey, let’s write a review for this thing”.
[ 1 MINUTE REVIEW ]
Pokemon might not have been the best anime, but it was hands down the best concept ever. It was a concept so adorable, yet contained so many fun elements in it such as Pokemon battles, gyms, trainers and so much more. The concept of a Pokemon world was so well woven into the real world, that I started looking at butterflies as Butterfrees and white cats as Meowths. And the impact was so widespread that kids all over the world knew what a Pikachu was and they all wanted one! I sincerely salute to the creator, Satoshi Tajiri, for creating a masterpiece of a concept. I am not even going into go into the animation, sound and character details as this is an anime we all loved when we were kids and I don’t think people who watch Pokemon watch it for complex stuff such as fluidity of animation, quality of OPs or character development. The story, well, is terrible, but it didn’t matter as the mere thought of having Pokemon alongside us was enough to keep you happy. Pokemon is one of the most innocent and charming anime of all time. I used to love this anime, I love this anime now and I always will love this anime. As Meowth says, “That’s right!”
[ 5 MINUTE REVIEW ]
Now, the long version of review will be split into 2 parts – in the first part I will be talking about the anime’s concept and its tremendous impact and in the second, I will review this anime, as a grown up and an unbiased reviewer. The second part will not affect the score as I will love this anime no matter what. It holds a special place in all our hearts.
Pokemon was the anime that introduced me, and many others, into the world of anime. If it were not for this show, I wouldn’t be here right now. That is reason enough for me to rate this anime a solid 8.
Pokemon was based on the game of the same name, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Both the game and the show are masterpieces. I mean, it was a downright revolutionary concept. It was brilliant. Just think about it. Wouldn’t it be beautiful to live in the world of Pokemon? Wouldn’t it be fun to go on a journey with a couple of your mates, to catch Pokemon, fight gym battles and try to become the best of them all?
You’re damn right, it would. The concept is so complex, yet so innocent and cuddle-able at the same time. Just the mere thought of the days when me and my friends spent hours arguing on who had the best Pokemon team puts a smile on my face. And if you think about it, it was the perfect childhood cartoon in my opinion. It was better than Popeye, where a guy beat another guy up to get a “babe”. It was better than Teletubbies, which promoted obesity and eating custard all day. And it was most certainly better than Tom & Jerry, where one animal would try to beat the living hell out of one another using anvils, hammers and other real life dangerous objects. Pokemon taught me so many wonderfully simple things that had a significant impact on my lives. I learnt to appreciate nature more, I was kinder to animals and I also learnt that if I ever have kids one day, I’ll be sure to let them watch this show first.
The whole idea of a Pokemon journey was fun - Journeying across various lands, meeting new people, catching new Pokemon, earning gym badges and learning to be a man. Once again, I must emphasize on the sheer simplicity and innocence of the anime. Throughout the anime I never had questions like “How do Pokemon die?”, “How are new Pokemon created” or “Did Ash ever have a crush on any of his female companions?” That in itself is proof that this anime is perfectly suited for kids.
Although the new seasons are tainting this anime’s image, this anime has won a permanent place in my heart. Pokemon is something that the entire world will never forget and will always be loved, by kids and adults alike.
Alright, this part of the review is strictly from a reviewer’s point of view. All emotions and biases aside, this is a dead serious review. I’m doing this only because it is my duty as a reviewer to judge all anime on an equal footing. However, I have tried to keep the review as entertaining as possible :D.
Pokemon has a horrible story. It suffers flaws in almost every department. The story is bad, to say the least. I mean what kind of mom allows her 10 year old kid on a trip around the world on foot, accompanied by a yellow rat which emits lightning bolts? Not a very sensible one.
Plot? What plot? All you get every episode are two scantily clad adults flying in a cat shaped balloon, stalking and trying to steal this one kid’s rat. There are no interesting incidents after the 80th episode and the only episodes NOT worth skipping are the ones with gym battles.
The characters are absolutely stupid. They are so knuckleheaded that you often feel like throwing something at them. For instance, even in the 250th episode, Ash is genuinely surprised at Team Rocket’s arrival and exclaims, “WHAT?! TEAM ROCKET?!?! WHAT DO THEY WANT WITH US?!?” Seriously dude? Seriously? Well, I’m not sure or anything, but since they’ve been trying to steal his Pikachu the last 250 times( unsuccessfully), I’m guessing they might be looking for that, Ash, my boy.
The OPs and the EDs were all very good. The first one I will never forget for the rest of my life. The EDs, had a fun Poke-rap that I used to love to rap along with. The background score was neatly done.
The animation quality was pathetic, but I’m not going to criticize it one bit as the anime is about 10 years old.
The most revolutionary concept over. If I had one wish,I would most probably to wish to live in a Pokemon world. Call me immature if you’d like, but hey, I’ll be happy and I don’t really care what you think. And if you annoy me too much, I’ll set my Charizard on you ^^ !
( P.S – Just for old times’ sake, here goes the Team Rocket introduction :
Jessie: Prepare for trouble!
James: And make it double!
Jessie: To protect the world from devastation!
James: To unite all people within our nation.
Jessie: To denounce the evils of truth and love!
James: To extend our reach to the stars above!
Jessie: Team Rocket, blast off at the speed of light!
James: Surrender now or prepare to fight!
Meowth: Me-owth! Dat's right!
And finally, “Team Rocket’s blasting off again..!” )
